You people are marvelous. And that's the understatement of the week, or month, or year. When it takes a village, you become a city!
As I told you last week, this whole project to help two deserving soloists from North Salem High with the $$ needed to compete at the State Solo Contest took on a life of its own, in part because of two unforeseen (but I think really lucky) circumstances. My first impulse had been to ask the Board to authorize two $50 checks, one for each student. That made sense, and would have been the sensible, businesslike thing to do. But our Treasurer, Vicki Seed, is traveling, and she's the only one who can write checks, so I made an appeal to all of you, included in last week's column.
Then when pledges came flooding in, and we quickly passed the goal, I had no way to tell you all to stop, because Karl (who sends out communications) was unavailable! And once he did send out that message, more and more people wrote to say they'd like to contribute anyway, since they knew how much the music program at North needed things that most other Salem high schools take for granted.
So as you know, I just told all interested contributors to drop cash into the designated bag at rehearsal.
That's the back story. The punch line is that you all chipped in (drum roll here):
Yes, that's what I said! After we counted it at home, Jon chipped in $3, and yesterday I delivered $700 in cash (including one check) to an absolutely flabbergasted Jennifer Kercher just outside the school office. We both cried.
The reason I think it was all so lucky is that you had the chance to be involved, and to know that the money came from a bunch of you personally, not from an institution known as Festival Chorale Oregon. Turns out you're the living embodiment of community at its best. Our rehearsal last Tuesday was buzzing with excitement, and I know for sure that it was because together we were doing a magic project! Who gets that chance? For the record, most of the denominations were 20's, and one man stepped up with a $100 bill! See what I mean?
Jenn will be writing to us, of course, but in the meantime, you have my total admiration for your incredible generosity.
Oh yeah, plans for next Tuesday: Movements 9 - 15, together for the entire rehearsal, moving to Queen for the final half hour. We got a good glimpse of Queen last week, and we're also beginning to grasp the whole shape of the Mass. Fun is beginning to happen. And great thanks go to Katrina for her fine work with Choir I, in our separate rehearsals.
In closing, if our FCO community gets this excited about making big projects happen, I'm thinking we could probably tackle financing the third bridge.

A Note From Ann Snelling
My dad's book, Farm Boy to Fly Boy, is published and available. It is his memoirs as a WWII fighter pilot in the India-Burma-China theater. He flew 69 missions and received the Distinguished Flying Cross. I'll bring some copies to rehearsal next week. Birthday special is $10 each.
